Key Text & Stories - Galatians 4:1-7

Let My People Go | The bible app for Kids

What’s Happening - This week’s stories explore what we do when we meet Jesus. Do we listen and choose to do our own thing? Do we listen and say yeah whatever. Do we listen and believe what God has said? What do we do when God speaks.

Have you ever been told to grow up before?

I certainly have. It's normally when I'm being silly or if I’m cranky. Do you do either of those? When did this last happen for you?

Does age equal being grown up? Does getting older mean I make good decisions? How can I choose everyday to choose Jesus.

Let's find out what our text says. Read up to verse 3 and see what it says about children.

1. I want to tell you this: While the one who will inherit his father’s property is still a child, he is no different from a slave. It does not matter that the child owns everything. 2 While he is a child, he must obey those who are chosen to care for him. But when the child reaches the age set by his father, he is free.

What do you think it means when it says ‘he is free’?

What is he free from?

What age do you think this is?

Have you ever thought “when I grow up Im going to do this my way,” rather than the way your parents have told you? We get to an age where we can choose what we are going to do.

Paul continues

3 It is the same for us. We were once like children. We were slaves to the useless rules of this world. 4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son. His Son was born of a woman and lived under the law.

Who was this woman? What does it mean by, she was born under the law?

Mary was born under the laws given to Moses.

5 God did this so that he could buy freedom for those who were under the law. His purpose was to make us his children.

We are adopted through Jesus. Jesus was a child of God and a child of the woman, Mary born under the law.

6 And you are God’s children. That is why God sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts. The Spirit cries out, “Father, dear Father.”[a] 7 So now you are not a slave; you are God’s child, and God will give you what he promised, because you are his child.

One of the things about God is that he never breaks a promise. It’s God’s thing. He even makes his promises come true in exactly the right time which we see when Jesus was born. All of the prophecies or promises came true when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. If God promises it, you can bet that it will happen. We may not know when, but it most definitely will happen.

Does getting older mean that you stop making bad choices?

Check out this video of Abraham and Sarah.

While this video is cute there is a part of the story missing. Can you tell me what it is?

Genesis 15 tells of the promise made by God  to Sarah and Abraham that they would have heaps of children and in the very next chapter we see Sarai telling Abraham to take Hagar and have a baby with her.

Does this seem like a good idea to you?

Have you ever wanted something so bad you asked God for it and he said yes but not yet.

Being grown up, free to make your own choices is what Paul is talking to the Galatians about. They just wanted to be able to say I kept the rules.

Sara chose to make Gods promise happen her self instead of waiting for God to make it happen.

Paul was encouraging them to live in a way that love ruled their life. That they would live out the promise of Jesus with them always. We can be encouraged the same way.

What do you think living a life of love looks like?

Choose to live holding Jesus’ hand. Instead of being stuck in what we cannot do choose Jesus. He invites us to go on an adventure with him in our everyday lives. Living, loving and serving the people who are around us.

We are constantly growing in love when we choose to follow Jesus and trust in Gods promise. We are free from being alone or afraid of what might happen to us because God has promised that believing in Jesus means he will be with us always. This is how we choose Jesus in our everyday life, believing and loving Jesus.

Check out this lego video and see something that we normally do, in a different way. Every little piece plays a part in this pancake work of art. Choose to let God lead us, build us like the hands in this lego movie. Every little thought we have builds our attitude. Choose a kind good thought and start to build around that today.

A Family Tree

Jesus calls us to be part of his family, to build a place where everyone is welcome..  Instead of only putting the family that we are born into on the tree add in all the people that you love. Imagine God's family tree, full of all the people that he loves. How big do you think God’s tree is? Printable family tree

I Spy

What do we choose to see? Jesus looks on us with love. This means he is cheering us on to do good things, not waiting for us to do something wrong. This week let’s learn to look on our family friends and the people we meet with love.

I spy is a guessing game where one player chooses an object within sight and announces to the other players that "Eye spy with my little eye, something beginning with...", naming the first letter of the object. Other players attempt to guess this object.

Stuck in the Mud

So often we get stuck in a way of thinking or in a bad place and we can’t get out. Remembering how much Jesus loves us is just like someone setting us free in this game of stuck in the mud. Every time you set someone free know that this is what Jesus has done for us for ever!

How to play:

Choose one player to be in.

The player who is in must run around and tag as many other players as they can.

When tagged, a player becomes 'stuck in the mud', they cannot move and must stand with their legs and arms apart.

The only way to be freed is for a non-tagged player to crawl through their legs.

We would love to see you playing, trying, making and sharing! Please share your photos with your KellyvilleKids community in our WhatsApp Group. If you’re new to our KellyvilleKids community and would like to stay connected, contact us.
