Key Text -   2 Kings 4:1-7 | Elisha and The Widows Oil | Ruth and Naomi Beginners Bible pg. 152-159.

What’s Happening

Generosity is all through the bible stories where people are following God. Our  two stories for this week are full of generosity, generosity in words and actions. Lets see how we can be generous in everything too.

Have you ever had to ask for help?

Our story this week is about how we can be generous in everything even when it feels like we have nothing.

A Widow Asks Elisha for Help

4 The wife of a man from a group of the prophets came to Elisha. She said, “Your servant, my husband, is dead! You know he honored the Lord. But now the man he owes money to is coming to take my two boys. He will make them his slaves!”

Can you see generosity in this passage? The Wife tells us something about her Husband. She says “You Know he honoured the Lord”.

Do you know what honour is? Honour is to respect in a big way, more than normal respect. This wifes, husband was generous with his respect. Generous is to be bigger than normal, more than normal. He was generous with Respect.

Can you think of how you can be generous with respect?

2 Elisha answered, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

The woman said, “I don’t have anything there except a pot of oil.”

3 Then Elisha said, “Go and get empty jars from all your neighbors. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then you must go into your house and close the door. Only you and your sons will be there. Then pour oil into all the jars. Set the full ones to one side.”

Can you see generosity in this passage? The wife didn't actually ask for help. Elisha could have just said “that’s horrible” and done nothing. Elisha says “How can I help You?”

Have you ever been in a situation where you know someone needed help but you didn't know what to do?

Elisha was being generous by asking her what he could do.

The neighbours were generous too. They gave their jars.

5 She left Elisha and shut the door. Only she and her sons were in the house. As they brought the jars to her, she poured the oil. 6 When the jars were all full, she said to her son, “Bring me another jar.”

But he said, “There are no more jars.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

Can you see the generosity in this passage? The wife and the sons were generous with their obedience. They did exactly what Elisha had told them too.

Have you ever thought about being generous with your obedience? How would you do that?

7 She went and told Elisha. Elisha said to her, “Go. Sell the oil and pay what you owe. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

In this miracle every jar was full. Nothing was wasted. No jar was empty and all the oil was used.

Can we be generous in how we treat people.

Can we be generous in obedience.

Can we be generous with what we have.

Can we be generous in everything.

Our words to remember for this week are

And God can give you more blessings than you need. Then you will always have plenty of everything. You will have enough to give to every good work.

God is generous it is who he is and he is generous to me. I am generous to you because he is generous to me. We can be generous in everything.

Let’s pray that we will always choose to be generous in everything.

Be generous with words.

Print out these Affirmation Cards to give to your family and friends. You can hide them in a place that they will find during the day, like in your Mums handbag or on the steering wheel of the car. You could even put one on your Teacher’s desk.

Here’s some more Affirmation Cards. (Generosity Rules) Enjoy!

Playhouse Kids

Print this out and follow the instructions.

Go for a walk around your house and find things that can make a picture together. You might find some plastic cups that look like eyes, or a banana that looks like a smile or a tangled up ball of wall that looks like hair. You can make whatever you like by putting all these different things together. If you're outside you can use sticks, leaves, flowers and rocks.

Everyday God is looking for people who want to be a part of his amazing picture. He needs your smile to cheer someone up, your eyes to see someone who is hurting, your hands to be gentle. Make something amazing today.

Pictionary

Can you draw a picture and have your family guess what it is.

Think of all the amazing things God has given us like animals and birds, fish, flowers and family. Think about all the stories that tell us how much Jesus loves us.

Take turns at drawing and see if you and your family can guess what the pictures are.

Skittles Tells Us

You will need a pack of skittles or smarties for this game. You could eat them all yourself or you could play and share something sweet. Skittles Tells Us printable

God is generous

God is generous all the time. He is constantly pouring out his love for us. Can you see it?

Try this experiment at home with plastic cups. Pray that we are always open to seeing God's generosity every day.

Playhouse Kids - This is a bath time activity. Take a couple of plastic cups to play with when it’s bath time. Play with pouring the water from one cup to the other. You always run out of water and you have to fill up from the cup or the bath. Try turning the tap on to warm water and hold one cup under the tap, then see if the other cup can fill up on the overflow from the first cup. Gods generous blessings can come directly from him to us. Just like the water pouring into the first cup. When we share that blessing with the people around us that is just like the overflow of the first cup into the second.

We are generous to others because God is generous to us.
