Acts 9 | Saul Meets Jesus

What’s Happening -   Our stories this week are really tough. Both our Characters, Moses and Saul are living in times that are difficult. God's Rescue plan, for the people who love him,  began before our characters were even born. God calls us to be part of his rescue plan too, even before we were born. This week let’s search for the good news and listen for God’s call in these stories and in our day.

SHARE - CONNECT MATERIAL FOR TREEHOUSE KIDS - Galatians 1:11-2:10 | Acts 9

Have you ever been so angry about something or at someone that you made a plan?

This week we are meeting Saul when he was super angry and he had a plan to do something about it.

Let’s find out how that happened.

Acts 9 begins with the word, meanwhile, this is a word that says while one thing is going on here something else is happening there. If we read chapter 8 we find that the Christians are being hunted by Saul and thrown in Jail. We see that even though times are really tough, wherever the Christians are, they are living love and talking about Jesus. Exactly what they were being hunted for.

9 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

What is the way?

Jesus came to show us a new way of living. This was called The Way. Pretty simple hey.

Have you ever felt like everyone was against you? Do you think that the people of The Way may have felt like that?

What would you do if you were being hunted because you believe in Jesus?

Let’s find out what Jesus did.

3 So Saul went to Damascus. As he came near the city, a bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around him. 4 Saul fell to the ground. He heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why are you doing things against me?” 5 Saul said, “Who are you, Lord?” The voice answered, “I am Jesus. I am the One you are trying to hurt. 6 Get up now and go into the city. Someone there will tell you what you must do.”

From this moment on Saul's life changed.

He speaks of this moment in his letters.

Here is what he says in Galatians 1:11

11 Brothers, I want you to know that the Good News I preached to you was not made by men. 12 I did not get it from men, nor did any man teach it to me. Jesus Christ showed it to me.

13 You have heard about my past life. I belonged to the Jewish religion. I hurt the church of God very much and tried to destroy it.

How did Paul get the good news?  (Jesus Christ showed it to me. Vs 12)

15 But God had special plans for me even before I was born. So he called me through his grace that I might 16 tell the Good News about his Son to the non-Jewish people. So God showed me about his Son. When God called me, I did not get advice or help from any man. 17 I did not go to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was. But, without waiting, I went away to Arabia and later went back to Damascus.

Why do you think Paul did that?

Paul took a journey just like the Israelites did when they came out of egypt. The Egyptians had been slaves for so long that they didn't know how to think for themselves or choose for themselves. In the wilderness they followed Moses and God. They did this for forty years. Paul took years to get to know who Jesus was and how that changed him.

Paul had been a slave to the law, making sure everyone kept the rules. When Saul meets Jesus he feels what grace is like. He chooses to live in love and serve Jesus from then on.

Meeting Jesus changes who we are and how we treat people. Paul went from a big Bully to a man who loved all people and loved Jesus even more.

What plans do you have for today? Gods plan for you is that you would hear his call and live in love.

Playhouse Kids  Listening is something we can get really good at. Listening to God is the best!

Make these cup telephones and talk to each other. Listen carefully to what each other is saying. Know that God is calling you to live in love with Him. Let’s get good at listening to his call.

For this activity you will need:

  • 2 cups

  • A long piece of wool or string.

  • Scissors.

  • Tape.

How to:

  1. Poke a hole through the bottom of each of the cups.

  2. Thread the string through the cup and tie a knot so the string doesn fall out. If it does tape it down.

  3. Stretch out the wool and talk into the cup while someone else listens on the other end. Take turns at talking and listening.

Treehouse Kids | Make Music

Saul was not listening to the Good News about Jesus. When he could not see, all he could do was listen. Saul got very good at listening. How good are you at listening? Try and make this xylophone and listen to the difference in sounds. This is called pitch.

Can you discover other ways of making sounds of different pitches?

Blind Man’s Bluff - We have senses to help us experience the world around us. How great is it, that our nose is on our face and not on our feet. That would be smelly!

When we take away one of our senses, sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing all the other senses work extra hard to tell us what is going on. What can you see, hear, taste, touch and smell that God has made?

With your family and friends play Blind Man's Bluff. All you need is a bandanna and a set out area to play in that is safe for someone who is blindfolded.

Check out how to play Blind Man’s Bluff in this video.

Listening for Calls

Go outside just as the sun is starting to go down and listen. What can you hear?

Close your eyes and listen. Can you imagine what it might sound like at the zoo? Animals and birds and insects call each other, can you hear them? God has a call for you too. He calls you to come live in love with Him.
